The idea of companion planting is not new. It has been practiced for hundreds of years. Enhancing the flavor of vegetables or keeping insects away, should all be considered when deciding plants to use.
Some planting guidance...
- Basil
- Improves the growth and flavor of Tomatoes. Also repels flies and mosquitoes. Do not plant near Rue.
- Caster Bean Plant
- Drives moles and mice away. Very poisonous plant.
- Chives
- Improves the flavor of Tomatoes. Chives drive away the Japanese beetle and Carrot Rust Fly. Plant around Apple trees to help prevent scab.
- Four-O'Clocks
- Attract the Japanese Beetle and then poisons them to death. Four-O'Clocks are very poisenous to humans as well. Be careful!
- Garlic
- Plant near Roses to repel Aphids.
- Horseradish
- Plant in containers and place in the potato patch to keep the Colorado Potato beetles away. Alos keeps the Blister beetle away.
- Lemon Balm
- Lemon Balm has citronella compounds that when crushed and rubbed on the skin keeps mosquitoes away.
- Marigolds
- Planted throughout the garden is a good general insect repelant. It also adds color to your garden with little care. Excellent drought resistant plant.
- Marjoram
- Improves flavor of vegetables and herbs.
- Mint
- Deters ants, rodents, flea beetles, aphids and improves tomatoes plants. It attracts the hoverflies, earthworms and predatory wasps.
- Nasturtium
- Deters whiteflies, squash bugs, cucumber beetles and other pests. A good trap for aphids. A good plant for under the fruit trees to keep some bugs away. The flowers, leaves and seeds are all edible.
- Peppermint
- Repels white cabbage moths, aphids, and flea beetles Bees and other benificial insects love it.
- Pennyroyal
- Repels Fleas. Crushed leaves and rubbed onto skin will repel choggars, flies, gnats, mosquitoes and tacks.
- Pentunia
- They repel the asparagus beetle, leafhaoppers, some aphids, tomato worm, mexican bean beetle and other general pests.Good to plant anywhere in the garden.
- Rosemary
- Deters Cabbage moths, bean beetls and carrot fly. Use cuttings to lay at the crown of carrots for carrot flies.
- Sage
- Use as a companion with broccoli, cauliflower, roemary, cabbage, and carrots to deter cabbage moths, beetle, black flea beetles and carrot flies. Do not plant next to cucumbers. Flowering sage will attract many benificial insects.
- Tansy
- Plant with fruit trees, roses and raspberries keeping in mind that it can be very invasive. Tansy is a good repelant against Sugar ants... the kind of ant that you see on peonies or marching into the kitchen.
- Tarragon
- Tarragon is good to plant throughout the garden to enhahance the flavor of most vegetables.
- Thyme
- Deters the cabbage worm.
